Leaf internal structure. Flashcards
Upper and Lower Epidermis Tissue =?
Epidermis tissue is made up of palisade cells. most of the photosynthesis in the leaf happens here.
What’s a Stomata?
The Stomata delivers water and minerals which are in the soil through the roots to other parts of the plant.
Some of this water is used in photosynthesis by the leaves.
Palisade Tissue is what?
Palisade tissue is transparent cells which allow sunlight to pass through and reach the photosynthesis cells.
It also produces a waxy substance which prevents water loss.
Spongy Tissue
Spongy tissue = small pores (tiny holes) in the lower epidermis that allows carbon dioxide CO2 to diffuse/move into the leaf and oxygen to diffuse out.
Visualise a small fishing net with tiny holes which lets things move in and out.
Xylem Tissue =?
Xylem tissue delivers food molecules for example sugars produced by photosynthesis, to where they are needed.
Xylem is composed mainly of dead cells where the phloem is composed of living cells which transports sap.
Phloem Tissue =?
ph is f for sound.
Phloem tissue transports and distributes the organic nutrients made during photosynthesis to where needed, the parts where less photosynthesis takes place.
This includes sugars ,some mineral ions, which travel as the dissolved form of sap. Sap is water based and rich in sugars made by photosynthesis. they are transported to non photosynthetic parts of the plants like the roots or storge structures like the bulbs or tubers.
