Levels of Measurement Flashcards
1
Q
what is levels of measurement ?
A
refers to the differences in precision
2
Q
nominal data?
A
- ‘nom’ is french for name - data in names categories in which frequencies are counted
- head count - tells us how many ppl in each group
- described as category data
- frequency data
3
Q
Examples of nominal data?
A
how many boys & girls in a psychology class
4
Q
ordinal data?
A
- data that is put into RANK ORDER
- but INTERVALS BETWEEN EACH RANK UNKNOWN
- may be that scale is subjective - often a scale that involves some sort of judgement/ opinion
5
Q
Ordinal data examples?
A
- who came 1st, 2nd, 3rd in a contest
- if you are asked how happy you are on a scale of 1-10
- score on an unstandardised test e.g. questionnaires, memory tests
6
Q
interval data ?
A
- most precise type of data
- data that is measured using fixed units of equal measurement, so there is an EQUAL gap betweene ach unit on the scale being used
- can go into - values
7
Q
interval data examples?
A
- e.g. public scale of measurement such as time in mins
- score on a standardised test e.g. IQ test
8
Q
ratio data?
A
- same as interval but starts at 0 (remember ratios are always above 0)
9
Q
ratio data examples?
A
e.g. CMs, Ms
bc fixed distance between intervals, doesn’t go below 0
