Levels of measurement Flashcards
Research methods
1
Q
What is nominal data?
A
Shows categories of data by frequencies
no relative numerical value
e.g. boys and girls
2
Q
What is ordinal data?
A
-where data can be placed into ascending/descending order
-intervals between data are not always equal
e.g. 1st, 2nd, 3rd in a race: ascending order but intervals between times may not be equal
3
Q
what is interval data?
A
- equal numerical intervals between scored
e.g. temperature
interval between 1&2 degrees is the same as between 21&22 degrees
4
Q
What is ratio data?
A
- equal intervals between scores and has absolute/ true zero point
e.g speed (mph) - most sophisticated
5
Q
What is meant by sophistication?
A
how much detail each measure gives about the detail it provides
6
Q
Why does the sophistication level of the data matter?
A
- the level of sophistication impacts the type of statistical test that will be used
