Inferential statistics Flashcards
Research methods
What are the 5 statistical tests?
- chi squared
- spearmans ro
- sign test
- wilcoxon t
- mann whitney u
What is an observed value?
calculated value created through the analysis of the data
What is a critical value?
preassigned value in the table.
What is the ‘R up’ rule?
if there is an R in the name of the test
- chi squaRed, speaRmeans rho
- observed value needs to be equal to or greater than the critical value to be significant
if no R then the observed value but be less than or equal to the critical value
What do probablity and significance mean ?
-Accept a probability value of 95%, 5% chance that the hypothesis is incorrect.
- significance level of 0.05
-results significant at 0.05 level=accept the hypothesis
-results higher accept the null
When is an inferential test used?
- to calculate the probability that the results were do to chance or are statistically significant.
When will a researcher be testing for difference?
- experiments
- can be quasi when differences between the p’s are being tested
- testing 2 conditions and one DV
When will a researcher be testing for correlation?
- non experimental
- testing a relationship/link between 2 variables
- measures groups of p’s
What are the 2 types of experimental design?
Related :
- repeated measures, matched pairs
Unrelated:
- independent groups
What are the 4 levels of measurement?
- nominal
- ordinal
- interval
- ratio
Describe the Chi squared test
- predicts a test of difference between two conditions or an association between variables
- independent
nominal
Describe Mann Whitney U test
- test of difference
- independent groups
- at least ordinal
Describe the sign test
- test of difference
- related data
- nominal
Describe wilcoxon t test
- test of difference
- related data
- ordinal/interval data
