Experimental design Flashcards
Research methods
What is an experimental condition?
where the p’s ARE exposed to the manipulation of the IV
What is a control condition?
where the p’s are NOT exposed to the manipulation of the IV
What are the 3 types of experimental design?
-repeated measures
-independent groups
- matched pairs
What are the features of an experimental design?
- order effects
- demand characteristics
- number of participants
- participant variables
What is repeated measures?
- p’s take part in both the control and experimental condition.
- performance in both conditions is compared
STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES of repeated measures
STRENGTHS
- participant variables
- number of p’s
WEAKNESSES
- order effects
- demand characteristics
What is counter balancing for repeated measures?
- when participants are split into two groups and set to different conditions.
- reduces order effects
- group 1 do EC then CC
- group 2 do CC then EC
What is independent groups?
- p’s take part in only 1 condition
- can be done if the IV is naturally occurring
- p’s randomly selcted to take part in either the EC/CC
STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES of independent groups
STRENGTHS
- order effects
- demand characteristics
WEAKNESSES
- participant variables
- number of p’s
What is matched pairs?
- form of independent groups design
- researcher uses pairs of p’s who have been matched for participant variables that could influence the DV.
-One of the pair do the EC the other does the CC
STRENGTHS/WEAKNESSES of matched pairs
STRENGTHS
- participant variables
- number of p’s
WEAKNESSES
- demand characteristics
- order effects
