What is a democracy?
Elect government and have a say in how it’s run
What’s a direct democracy?
Where those involved directly determine the outcome
What is representative democracy
Citizens appoint or elect somebody to represent their views
What is a dictatorship
Rule by one person or group which is all powerful, often associated with a military takeover
What is a one state party
Only one political party exists and runs the country, often associated with a communist form of government
What is a theocracy
Where religious leaders run the state
What is a monarchy
Political party is held by a family and passes through generations, a constitutional monarchy has very little power, absolute monarchy has all the power
What is an anarchy
No government operates, total breakdown in society
What is a constitution?
The basic laws and principles of a nation or state or social group that determine the powers and duties of government and guarantee certain rights to the people in it
What is separation of powers and why is it important?
Make sure nobody becomes too powerful/a dictator.
The legislative, the executive, the judicial branch

Carries out the law but cannot make laws
What is the judicial branch
Courts that decide if the law has been broken, they are also responsible for making sure criminals are punished
What is an uncodified constitution
An unwritten constitution, no set of clear written laws
