What is NATO and what is its purpose?
The North Atlantic treaty organisation, originally an alliance of 12 countries, designed to protect them from attack
What is article 5?
An attack on one member of NATO is an attack on all members.
3 negative aspects of NATO:
-expanding increases risk for other members
-Article 5 has only been invoked once since the agreement was made
-only 5 nations fulfil their funding requirements for NATO (US, Greece, UK, Estonia, Poland)
5 positive aspects of NATO:
-able to help crisis situations from around the world
-fights terrorism
-served as a deterrent for Russian invasion
-prevents countries from developing nuclear weapons
-provides options for cyber defence (stolen info from other countries)
