Lesson 9: macOS File Storage Structure Flashcards
Key Points
By default, each storage device, or disk, consists of one Apple File System (APFS) container.
Each container may have multiple volumes.
Free space is shared between volumes in a container.
The default APFS container consists of five volumes, the first three of which are hidden from the user.
System Integrity Protection is a security technology designed to protect critical files that are essential for the operating system to function.
Some protected directories include /System, /usr, /bin, and /sbin.
All apps pre-installed with the operating system, like System Preferences and Console, are also protected.
System Integrity Protection can be disabled through Recovery mode, but this is discouraged.
Disk Utility is an app for viewing and modifying volumes on connected disks.
The Finder is used to access the file system in a user-oriented view.
Directories can be represented by their file path. A forward slash at the beginning of a file path precedes the first directory in the file system hierarchy, known as the root directory.
Four root directories—Applications, Library, System, and Users—are separated into domains based on how they’re used.
The system domain contains system software installed by Apple in the System directory.
The local domain contains apps and preferences shared by all users in the Applications and Library directories.
The user domain contains files and preferences specific to each user in the Users directory.
