Lesson 9 Flashcards
Describe the biological theory of memory loss.
Memory changes are the result of physiological aging such as brain damage, neuron death, loss of cells. The evidence for this is inconclusive.
What theory proposes that as adults start to decline physically and cognitively, they start to withdraw from society?
Disengagement theory
This psychologist proposed the “7 stages after retirement” that a person experiences.
Robert Atchley
Leonard Hayflick proposed this theory that any given animal species seemed to have a set # of times their cells could divide and that aging was programmed into our cells.
Programmed senescence
Briefly describe the “activity theory”
The more active a person remains, the more satisfied they’ll be with life.
The time in the life span when the physical changes associated with aging become apparent.
Senescence
What is the wear and tear theory?
Proposes that our bodies are like cars - over the years the parts just wear out.
Ages 65-74 that, compared to the “old-old” are more likely to be healthy, active, married, and living independently.
Young-old
A condescending way of talking to older adults that resembles baby talk, exaggerated emphasis, short phrases, mane a slower rate.
Elderspeak
Older adults (generally over 75) who suffer from physical, mental, or social deficits.
Old-old
The number of times a human cell is capable of dividing into 2 new cells.
Hayflick limit
The ends of chromosomes. Their length decreases with each cell division and seems to correlate with longevity.
Telomeres
An enzyme that increases the length of telomeres, may in turn slow the advance of aging.
Telomerase
Words or ideas presented in advance that makes it easier to remember something.
Priming
An overall slowdown of cognitive abilities in the weeks and months before death.
Terminal drop or terminal decline
