Lesson 8e: Opportunistic pathogens Flashcards
this group rarely cause enteric disease in domestic animal, but sometimes involved in localized opportunistic infections in diverse anatomical locations by circumventing host defence mechanism and colonize and survive in affected organs
Opportunistic pathogens
produce abundant capsular material which may inhibit phagocytosis and enhance intracellular survival
Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter species
particular importance in those bacteria that colonize the lower urinary tract
adhesins
produced by some opportunistic pathogens contribute to bacterial survival when the supply of available iron in tissues is limited
Siderophores
induce local and systemic changes which include inflammatory responses, pyrexia, endothelial damage and microthrombosis
endotoxin
Diarrhoea; wound infections in some animal species (rare)
Edwardsiella tarda
coliform mastitis in cows and sows
Enterobacter aerogenes
Coliform mastitis in cows; endometritis in mares; pneumoniae in calves and foals; urinary tract infections in dogs
Klebsiella pneumoniae
ear and urinary tract infections in dogs and cats (uncommon)
Morganella morganii subsp. morganii
urinary tract infections in dogs and horses; associated with otitis externa in dogs
Proteus mirabilis and P. vulgaris
Bovine mastitis (uncommon); septicaemia in chickens (rare)
Serratia marcescens
