Lesson 7 Joints: Classification Flashcards
is where two bones meet, articulate with one another to form a connection
joint or articulation
is where the adjacent bones are united by fibrous connective tissue.
Examples includes suture joint of the skull,
Fibrous joint
the bones are joined by hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage. Examples are: the temporary hyaline cartilage of the epiphyseal plate
Cartilaginous joint
the articulating surfaces of the bones are not directly connected, but instead
come into contact with each other within a joint cavity that is filled with a lubricating fluid
Synovial joint
includes suture joint between the joints of the skull, and the epiphyseal growth plate growing along the long bones like femur.
Synarthrosis or Immovable Joint
joint that haslimited movements.
Example is the cartilaginous joint that unites the bodies of adjacent vertebrae.
Amphiarthrosis or Slightly movable joint
this describes all synovial joints of the body
Diarthrosis or Freely movable joint
allows motion in a single plane.
Example is the elbow joint which allows flexion and extension the arm.
Uniaxial joint
allows for motions within two planes. An example is a metacarpophalangeal joint
Biaxial joint
also known as polyaxial or triaxial joint which allows several directions of movements.
Multiaxial joint
