Lesson 6 Bone Structure Flashcards
is the tubular shaft that run between the proximal and distal ends of the bone
Diaphysis
is the hollow region in the diaphysis, which is filled with yellow marrow.
Medullary cavity
The ends of the long bones are
wider which is filled with spongy bone of red marrow
Epiphysis
the bone stops growing at what age?
around age 18-21
The medullary cavity is lined with a delicate membrane called
endosteum
is the membranous outer surface
covering of the bone that contains blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic vessels that nourish
compact bone.
Periosteum
covers the surface of the epiphyses that reduces friction and acts as a shock absorber.
Articular cartilage
typically thin, it is also often curved; consists of a layer of spongy bone and on either side by a layer of compact bone
Flat bones
are cylindrical in shape, and longer than it is wide; they move when muscles contracts
Long bones
is one that is cube-like in shape, being approximately equal in length, width, and thickness
Short bones
e is one that does not have any easily characterized shape and therefore does not fit any other classification
Irregular Bones
e is a small, round bone that, as the name suggests, is
shaped like a sesame seed.
Sesamoid Bones
