Lesson 7 - Head Neck & Face Flashcards
Skull Bones
1 Occipital
2 Parietal
2 Temporal
1 Frontal
E.O.P.
External Occipital Protuberance - Place of muscle attachment
Foramen Magnum
Hole in base of skull where spinal chords passes through
Condyles for Atlas
Occipital ridges that sit on C1
Facial Bones
2 Nasal
2 Zygomatic - Cheek bones
2 Maxilla - Left & right
1 Mandible
Zygomatic Arch
“Apple of cheek bone”
Sinuses
Cavities or holes in skull that help you hear / communicate. Can be stimulated via vibration.
Cranial Sutures
Fibrous skull joint that connects bones of skull
Temporomandibular Joint
Synovial joint /hinge joint between temporal bone and mandible
Facial Muscles
Unusual because they can originate in bone or fascia and insert into other muscles or skin. This is what allows for lots of facial expressions (muscle pulling on skin)
Platysma
Most superficial muscle of anterior neck
- Depression of mandible
- Tightens neck fascia
Massester
Main muscle involved in mastication
1. Elevates mandible / TMJ
Temporalis
Massive origin on temporal bone. Deep to masseter.
- Elevates & retracts mandible / TMJ
Sternocleidomastoid
Sternum + Clavicle + Mastoid.
Divides neck into anterior (danger) and posterior (happy) triangles.
Actions:
1. Bilateral - flexion of neck
2. Unilateral - lateral flexion of head and neck to the side
3. Unilateral - rotates head & neck to opposite side
