Lesson 3 - Feet & Legs Flashcards
Foot & Ankle
Made out of 26 bones
1. Phalanges (14)
2. Metatarsals (5)
3. Tarsals (7)
Phalanges
14 Toe Bones
Metatarsals
5 types
Tarsals
7 Bones between metatarsals & leg
- Talus
- Calcaneus
Talus
Tarsal that is part of the ankle joint
Calcaneus
Heel bone, big!
Arches of the Foot
- Medial Longitudinal
- Lateral Longitudinal
- Transverse
Functions:
Balance, Shock Absorption, Spring in Gait, Weight Distribution
Medial Longitudinal Arch
On the big toe side
Lateral Longitudinal Arch
On the little toe side
Transverse Arch
Underneath & across the foot
Ankle Joint
Tibia + Fibula + Talus
Tibia
Large bone in lower anterior leg – “shin bone”
Medial Malleolus
bony landmark that is on the interior or MEDIAL side of leg. Think “inside ankle ball”
Fibula
Long & thin leg bone lateral to Tibia.
Lateral Malleolus
bony landmark that is on the exterior or LATERAL side of leg. Think “outside ankle ball”
Interosseus Membrane (or Ligament)
inter-osseus means “between bone”. This is connective tissue (collagen) between Tibia & Fibula
Femur
Longest bone in the body. Makes up thigh.
Greater Trochanter
Bony landmark and muscle attachment point (find out which) located in proximal & lateral part of femur’s shaft
Head (Femur)
The most proximal part of the femur; the “ball on top”
Knee Joint
where the Femur & Tibia meet
Patella
Kneecap bone that protects knee during flexion
Patellar Ligament
Connects patella to the tibia
Hip Bone
Made up of
1. Ilium
2. Ischium
3. Pubis
Illium
Uppermost & widest section of 3 hipbones.
Illiac Crest
bony landmark - “elephant ear” shaped top of the Ilium
Anterior Superior Illiac Spine (ASIS)
bony landmark - where the rectus femorus attaches.
Anterior Inferior Illiac Spine (AIIS)
bony landmark - just below the ASIS
Ischium
Lowermost section of 3 hip-bones aka “butt-bones”
Ischial Tuberosity
bony landmark - point of muscle attachment to hamstring
Pubis
forward-most portion of hipbones aka “pubic bone”
Symphysis Pubis (interpubic disc)
The point where 2 pubic bones meet in front of pelvis
Acetabulum
Where 3 hip-bones (ilium, ischium, pubis) meet.
Cup-shaped cavity located on the lateral face of the hip bone that articulates with the head of the femur to form the hip joint.
Hip Joint
Head of Femur + Acetabulum (Pelvis)
Pelvic Girdle
2 Ilium + 2 Ischium + 2 Pubis = 2 Hip Bones
Pelvis
2 Ilium + 2 Ischium + 2 Pubis + 1 Sacrum + 1 Coccyx
Sacroiliac Joint
Joint where the sacrum and ilium bones meet
Tibialis Anterior
Anterior Leg Muscle
1. Dorsiflexion of ankle joint (foot off pedal)
2. Inversion of the foot (Olly front foot)
Peroneals / Fibularis
Lower leg muscle group that is on or lateral to Fibula (longus / brevis)
1. everts the foot
Rectus Femoris
One of the heads of the Anterior quadraceps muscle group. Crosses both hip & knee joint.
- Extends Knee Joint
- Flexes Hip Joint
Sartorius
Runs down thigh, longest muscle in the body
1. Flexes hip joint
2. Lateral rotation of hip joint
3. Abducts hipjoint
4. Flexes knee joint
4 syllables, 4 actions
Anterior Thigh Muscles
Quadriceps
Rectus Femoris
Satorius
Iliopsoas
Anterior Pelvis muscle
1. primary flexor of hip joint
Adductors
Anterior medial thigh muscles that adduct hip joint
Perineum
Boundaries - Symphysis Pubis
Coccyx
Ischial Tuberosity
Levator Ani
Forms floor of the pelvis + supports internal organs
Muscle Names Come From
- Shape - “rhomboids”
- Location on body -“Fibularis anterior”
- Action - “adductors”
- # Of Origins - “biceps / quadriceps”
If a muscle crosses a joint…
It will affect that joint
Foot Muscles
- Flexors
- Extensors
- Retinaculum
- Plantar Aponeurosis
Flexors
Found on plantar surface (bottom) of feet ;
action - curling toes underneath
Extensors
Found on dorsal surface (top) of feet
action - extend toes
Retinaculum
on dorsal surface (top) of foot ; tendon cable management
Plantar Aponeurosis
superficial flattened tendon on bottom of foot, supports arch
Lower Leg Muscles
Gastrocnemius
Soleus
Gastrocnemius
Big calf muscle on posterior leg
- Plantarflexion of the ankle joint, “ballerina toes”.
Synergestic with Soleus and Tibalis Anterior
- Flexes knee joint
Soleus
Powerful muscle underneath Gastrocnemius
- Plantarflexion of ankle joint, “ballet feet”. Synergestic with Gastrocnemius and Tibialis Anterior
Hamstrings
Group of 3 muscles, Posterior Thigh; origin - Ischial Tuberosity
- Flexes knee joint (synergestic with Gastrocnemius)
- Extends hip joint
Gluteal Region Muscles
- Gluteus Maximus
- Gluteus Medius
- Gluteus Minor
- Six Deep Lateral Rotators
- Tensor Fascia Latae
- Iliotibial Tract
Gluteus Maximus
- extends hip joint
- laterally rotates hip joint (femur rotates out)
Gluteus Medius
- abducts hip joint
- medially rotates hip joint
fully synergistic with gluteus minor
Gluteus Minor
- abducts hip joint
- medially rotates hip joint
fully synergistic with gluteus medius
Six Deep Lateral Rotators
six muscles that laterally rotate hip joint
Tensor Fascia Latae
tenses IT band
Iliotibial Tract
Fascia located on lateral side of thigh
Stablizes knee joint (esp lateral movements)
