Lesson 33 (Keal) Flashcards
Trustee model
Made by Edmund Burke
Irish MP
Believed MPs should vote on what THEY believed, and not their constituents, as they are more intelligent
E.g. Chris Bryant voted against leaving the EU whilst 60% of his constituents voted for it
Delegate model
MPs are nothing more than a voice for the constituents
They should only vote the way constituents want them to
Shouldn’t vote on their personal beliefs
Terrible because not all constituents think the same
Doctrine of the Mandate model
In winning an election, a party gets a mandate to act out the party’s policies (not the person’s policies as they are pushed down by party whips)
And so, due to that mandate, MPs should be allowed to represent the party in voting first, instead of constituents
Hung parliament
No party gets a majority
But there is still a simple majority (a party with the most seats)
What type of government forms in a hung parliament?
A minority government
Example of when there was a hung parliament?
2017 general election
Conservatives got a simple majority
Under Thersea May
