Lesson 2.2. The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What is the cardiovascular system composed of?
The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood.
Provide a breakdown of the word cardiovascular.
“Cardio” refers to the heart, and “vascular” refers to the blood vessels.
What does good circulation provide?
Good circulation fuels the cells with oxygen, protein, and other vital nutrients for fuel and increases the speed at which carbon dioxide, cellular wastes and toxins are removed from the body.
How does blood adjust the body’s temperature?
Blood adjusts the body’s temperature through the heat-absorbing and cooling properties of its water content and by modifying the rate of blood flow through the skin, where excess heat can escape.
How does blood provide a protective function?
Blood also serves a protective function; its clotting mechanism prevents blood loss from wounds to the skin or from internal damage, and its white blood cells, which are a part of the immune system, protect against toxins and foreign invaders.
