Lesson 2-2 and 2-3 Assess your understanding quiz Flashcards
Cell
The basic unit of structure and fucntion
Cell wall
A rigid layer that surrounds the cells of plants
Cell membrane
Controls which substances pass into and out of a cell
Nucleus
Cell’s control center, directs all of cells activities
Chromatin
Thin strands of material that fills the nucleus containing information for directing cell’s functions
Nucleolus
The small round structure in a nucleus where ribosomes are made
Ribosomes
Small grain-shaped organelles that produce proteins
Organelles
Cell structures that carry out specific functions within a cell
Cytoplasm
A fluid that floats around in a cell carrying organelles
Mitochondria
Convert energy stored in food to energy the cell can use to live and function
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
An organelle with a network of membranes that produces many substances
Golgi apparatus
Receives proteins and other newly formed materials from the ER, packages and distributes them
Vacuole
A sac that stores water and food in cells
Choloroplast
Captures energy from sunlight and makes it into energy for the cell
Lysosomes
Sac like organelles that contain substances that break down food particles into smaller ones
Tissue
A group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function
Organ
Made up of different kinds of tissues that performs a function
Organ system
A group of organs that work together to perform a major function
Element
Any substance that cannot be broken down into similar substances
Compund
When two or more elements combine chemically
Carbohydrate
Energy rich organic compound made up of the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
Lipid
Compounds made up of mostly hydrogen, carbon and some oxygen
Protien
Large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen nitrogen and sometimes sulfur
Enzyme
Speed up chemical reactions in living things
Nucleic acid
Molecules that consist of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and phosphorus, give instructions that cells need to carry out all of the functions of life
DNA
A genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring
Double helix
The shape of a DNA molecule
