Lesson 2 Flashcards
What are the three estimates of central tendency?
Mode, Median and Mean
When should you not use the mode?
- ignores most of the info in a distribution.
- small samples may not have the mode.
What is the mode?
The most repeated score in the distribution.
What cases is the median best suited for?
- ordinal data
- open ended distributions.
- extreme scores.
What is the median?
The score that divides the distribution in half.
Where is the mean always useful?
When testing hypotheses because no data points are ignored.
What pairs with the mode?
Variation Ratio (VR)
What does the VR tell us?
Tell us how much variability is on our data.
What does Q3 of the IQR represent?
Separates the bottom 75% of data from the top 25%/
What measure of dispersion is paired with the median?
IQR
What does a large standard deviation tell us?
Tells us there is a lot of variability of extreme values in our data and we mush be conscious when trusting it.
What is a downfall of pie charts?
Struggles when there is more than one variable on display and certain details are missed.
What is the difference between a histogram vs. a bar graph.
A bar graph is used for discrete or categorical data while a histogram is used for continuous data.
What do the whiskers on a box plot represent?
Help show the dispersion and the maximum and minimum of all data points within 1.5 times.
What are the 3 questions you must ask yourself in order to spot a bad statistic?
1) Can you see uncertainty?
2) Can I see myself in the data?
3) How was the data collected?
