  1. What should be checked before starting a compressor? After Starting?
A
Pre-Start:
Breaker racked in
Panel powered on
Load/Unload switch in the unload position
Main oil pump in Auto
Vibration panel clear
Inlet valve closed
Blow off 100% open
Instrument Air to the Inlet Valve
Oil levels on the blower and motor
ACW Block Valves open
ACW open to both Oil Coolers
Oil filter and Coolers selected
Instrument Air to Leslie control valve open
Instrument Air open to the solenoids for the trap blow downs.
Trap valves open and power to the solenoids
Instrument Air to Aux oil pump
All Block valves are open to Aux oil pump
Oil level in oiler
Call control room to start main oil pump
Heat and vibration on main oil pump
Reservoir level
Manometers on the panel
Check oil levels, leaks, pressure again
DP on filters
Compressor start
Post-Start:
Load-up compressor
Inlet valve open
Blow off valve cut back
Check heat and vibration on blower stage
Check oil levels
Check for Inlet valve movement
Check Leslie valves are operational
Check Cooler outlet temps and pressures
Check Cooler Water Traps are operational
Oil pressure and temps on Bull Gear and oil system
Manometer on compressor and panel
System pressure is correct and maintaining
Call CR to confirm compressor is operational

Q
  1. When shutting down a compressor, what should be your primary concern?
A

Verify the load is supported by another compressor and verify the compressor check valve is operating, and close manual block discharge valve to prevent any air from turning the motor backwards

16
Q
  1. Where does the Unit #2 compressor get its power supply?
A

Unit #2 Vault

17
Q
  1. What needs to be insured prior to the Control room operator being able to start #3 soot-blower air compressor?
A

Aux oil pump is on

Pre-Start checks

18
Q
  1. What should you do if you find the Aux. Oil pump running on unit #3 with the soot blower compressor in service?
A

Call Control Room to check if there are any alarms.
Verify the Main oil pump has started
Turn off Aux oil pump at control panel and put back in Auto

19
Q
  1. Explain how to run the periodic test on the soot blower air compressor.
A

Contact Control Room
Verify air pressure is present
Close oil supply valve to the gauge
Slowly open bleed/ relief valve
Record the pressure that the aux oil pump kicks on at
Close bleed/ relief knob and open pressure supply valve
Check Aux oil pump oiler and heat/vibration on Aux pump
Check for oil leaks
Run for 15 minutes

20
Q
  1. What should you do before taking a soot blower air compressor out of service?
A

Verify another SBAC is loaded, and the system is maintaining pressure.

21
Q
  1. What is the purpose of the soot blower anti surge controllers? Air Dryers?
A

Anti-surge controllers maintain constant system air pressure.
Air dryers remove moisture from the air to be used for Instrument Air.

22
Q
  1. Draw a one line diagram of the air flow and oil flow through the soot blower compressor.
A

Airflow: Inlet Valve – Blower Stage – Air Cooler – 1st Stage – Air Cooler – 2nd Stage – Air Cooler – 3rd Stage – Air Cooler – 4th Stage – Storage Tank – Out to the Plant

Oil Flow: Oil Reservoir – Main Oil pump – Oil Coolers – Oil Filters – Bull Gear – Oil Reservoir
