Lesson 18: Soot-Blower Air Compressors Flashcards
- What is the function of the soot-blower air compressor?
The SBAC provides soot blowing air, instrument air and house service air.
- Where are the breakers located for these compressors? What voltage are they?
Unit #1 Vault has 1A and 1B breakers
Unit #2 Vault has 2C breakers
Unit #3 Vault has 3D breakers
6900 Volts
- What should be checked before starting a compressor? After Starting?
Pre-Start: Breaker racked in Panel powered on Load/Unload switch in the unload position Main oil pump in Auto Vibration panel clear Inlet valve closed Blow off 100% open Instrument Air to the Inlet Valve Oil levels on the blower and motor ACW Block Valves open ACW open to both Oil Coolers Oil filter and Coolers selected Instrument Air to Leslie control valve open Instrument Air open to the solenoids for the trap blow downs. Trap valves open and power to the solenoids Instrument Air to Aux oil pump All Block valves are open to Aux oil pump Oil level in oiler Call control room to start main oil pump Heat and vibration on main oil pump Reservoir level Manometers on the panel Check oil levels, leaks, pressure again DP on filters Compressor start
Post-Start: Load-up compressor Inlet valve open Blow off valve cut back Check heat and vibration on blower stage Check oil levels Check for Inlet valve movement Check Leslie valves are operational Check Cooler outlet temps and pressures Check Cooler Water Traps are operational Oil pressure and temps on Bull Gear and oil system Manometer on compressor and panel System pressure is correct and maintaining Call CR to confirm compressor is operational
- What can you expect to happen when the compressor is started from the control room?
The Main oil pump will run for 5 minutes, then the compressor will start.
- When shutting down a compressor, what should be your primary concern?
Verify the load is supported by another compressor and verify the compressor check valve is operating, and close manual block discharge valve to prevent any air from turning the motor backwards
- List two things that will affect the compressors operation.
Load
Air Temperature
- What is the function of the air dryers? How often should they be switched?
The air dryers remove moisture from the air so that it can be used for Instrument Air.
Once per shift
- What should you do periodically on the air storage tanks?
Drain the moisture that has collected in the bottom of the tank
- What is the air pressure inside the tanks?
300 PSI
- What function do the Leslie controllers serve?
Leslie controllers regulate the ACW flow to the oil and air coolers.
- What cooling range should the outlet of the coolers be?
110 to 120 F
- What is the function of the traps on the coolers?
Traps collect moisture that’s inside the air coolers.
- If you notice that a soot blower compressor motor is not energized, but the compressor is turning what could be the problem?
The check valve is leaking by or the compressor discharge may not be shut.
- Where does the emergency air supply to the discharge valve come from?
Nitrogen bottles next to the SBAC panel
- Which compressor (a,b or c) is assigned to Unit #2?
2C
