of relating to sound or to the sense of hearing.
ex. the singer played an acoustic performance of a rock and roll song.
august(adj).
marked by majestic dignity or grandeur.
ex. She had a very august lineage; Her great-grandfather was the prince of india.
auspices(n).
patronage ; sponsorship
ex. This program is under the auspices of the Department of Education.
cavil(v).
to raise irritating and trivial objections; find fault w/ unnecessarily
ex. He finds something to cavil at in everything I say.
curator(n).
A person in charge of a museum, art, collection, etc.
ex. The curator had worked at the museum for over twenty years and knew alot about art.
extant(adj).
in existence; still existing; not destroyed or lost.
ex. There are only three extant copies of the document.
gamut (n).
the entire scale or range.
In just two minutes, she experienced the gamut of dramatic emotion from grief to joy when she saw her son return from the war.
ineffable(adj).
incapable of being expressed or described in words; inexpressible
ex. She was in ineffable joy when he asked her to marry him.
mellifluos(adj).
sweetly or smoothly flowing ; sweet-sounding
ex. She knew she was
in love automatically when she heard his mellifluous voice.
mien(n).
air, bearing, or demeanor.
ex. He was a man of noble mien; he was always true to his word and helped his people.
nonpareil(adj).
better than any other; having no equal.
ex. Helen of Troy’s beauty was nonpareil; no one else could match it.
patina(n).
a thin green residue that is formed naturally on copper and bronze after being exposed to air.
Ex. After seeing the patina formed on the penny, the mother forced her child to throw it away.
rapt(adj).
showing complete interest in something.
ex. He looked at me with rapt attention as I talked.
resuscitate(v).
to bring someone who was dying or unconcious to a concious state again.
ex. The patient stopped breathing but the doctors were able to resuscitate him.
