aggregate(adj).
formed by adding together two or more amounts.
ex. The university receives more than half its aggregate.
augur(n).
to show or suggest something that might happen in the future.
ex. The decision of drunk-driving doesn’t augur well.
bastion(n).
a fortified area or position.
ex. The rebel army retreated to its bastion in the mountains to regroup.
decorum(n).
correct or proper behavior that shows respect and good manners.
ex. He has no sense of decorum; he chews with his mouth open.
defunct(adj).
no longer existing or functioning
ex. She wrote for the now defunct newspaper.
disarray(n).
a lack of order or sequence.
ex. The room was in a disarray after the break in.
halcyon(adj).
calm, peaceful.
ex. Sandiego had very halcyon weather, there was not a cloud to be seen.
homily(n).
a usually short talk on a religious or moral topic.
ex. The priest gave a brief homily on forgiveness.
hyperbole(n).
a figure of speech that is greatly exaggerated.
ex. To say my father (who’s six feet) is a giant, is a hyperbole.
importune(v).
to beg for something urgently or
persistently
ex. He importuned him to give him money.
jurisdiction(n).
the right, power, or authority to administer justice by hearing and determining controversies.
ruminate(v).
to think carefully and deeply about something.
ex. The question got us ruminating on the real value of wealth.
temerity(n).
the qualify of being confident and unafraid.
ex. The freedom fighter was punished for his temerity and was shot.
winnow (v).
to make a list of possible choices smaller by removing the less desirable choices.
ex. The least qualified applicants were winnowed out of the initial pool.
