What is important to be aware of when doing administrative duties?
Of our surroundings within our work environment outside the scan room
What are examples of tasks performed outside of the scan room? (7)
- Have to go get your patient
- Talking to a radiologist
- Transferring a patient over to a different room
- Documentation
- keyboards - If you need help or you help someone else
- Making/taking a phone call
- Devices on the front desk used by numerous people throughout the day
- eg. pens, paper, stapler, doorknobs etc.
Why are items on the front desk a concern?
They are items we use so often and we don’t think about them carrying diseases
What objects are typically cleaned by the cleaning staff? (5)
- Computers
- Mouses
- Other electronic devices
- Wipe down counters
- Bathrooms/sinks
Should you perform hand hygiene after administrative duties?
Yes
How many times do you touch your face in an hour?
50 times
Why are electrical devices not cleaned as often?
Because we are scared of wrecking the device or interfering with the work on the device
- so not cleaned as often as it should
Who is responsible for taking appointments in large organizations?
There are departments that are responsible for patient bookings
Who is responsible for taking appointments in smaller organizations?
There may be times that the technologist will be required to make these appointments
What questions should you ask the patents when booking an appointment? (4)
- If they would like a male or female sonographer
- might not be able to provide this - If they have any allergies
- Informing them on the steps they need to take
- eg. fasting or filling their bladder - Do they have a fever or other symptoms
- important to identify diseases (such as MRSA)
Where do we seat a patient on contact precautions?
We want to limit the places they are touching
Why do we want to have a special place for patient who are on contact precautions? (3)
- We dont know the infectious disease they have
- Limit the spread to us and other patients
- Less cleaning to do later
- need to clean whatever they touch

In the intestines

What are precautions to take to protect the staff at the front desk? (5)
- The plexi glass
- The desk itself
- Short conversations
- Flagging patients prior to visit
- so they can prepare themselves - An overlapped metal/plastic partition
- still allows sound to pass
What does the plexi glass at the front desk do?
Provides protection against infection control and potential violence
What are personal objects from the patients that someone at the front desk might have to touch? (5)
- Requisitions
- Credit card
- Other identification
- Medical bracelet
- Coat
When is the sterile tray open? Why?
- Directly before the exam

How do you add sterile items to the sterile tray? (2)
- Grab package from the outside to open and drop it on the tray
- Grab the package from the outside to open and allow the sterile person to grab it and put it in the sterile tray
How do you open a sterile drape? (5)
- If there is a plastic outer wrap it is to be removed
- Place the package on the work surface
- Carefully reaching around the sterile area, open the flap furthest from your body first
- only touch the outside portion of the wrapping - Open the side flaps
- Open the flap closest to your body last
What are sterile items normally contained in?
Peal packages
Why is it important to keep the sterile field maintained? (2)
- In order to protect your patient from undue harm
