Young (1986)
Argues that left realism navigates between the hysteria about the underclass, moral panics and over policing in certain communities
Left realists:
They except that white collar and corporate crime are significant
They believe that there has been a significant increase in levels of street crime and the fear surrounding it
Islington crime survey
Found that 80.5% of people saw crime as a problem affecting their lives and women were found to be particularly affected by not going out after dark
The Square of crime:
Matthews and Young
They suggest that crime arises at an intersection and stresses the role of public opinion and informal focus control and also the role of the state ie formal social control
The two clearly into set as public sentiment can drive government policy and practice
Lea and Young:
They explain crime in three concepts:
Relative deprivation
Marginalisation
Subculture
The exclusive society
Young
Focuses on the way that society economically excludes increasing numbers of people and yours a link between social exclusion and crime
As economic exclusion increases as does social exclusion
Eval:
Left realists are challenged for the lack of evidence on the motives of offenders
Also it’s questionable as to how their ideas are
Although they do focus on the impact of society and inequalities individual behaviour
