Green Crime Flashcards
what is green crime?
give 3 examples
criminal activity that affects the environment negatively
e.g. dumping of toxic waste, fly-tipping and poaching
Franko Aas (2007)
suggests that green crime shows the intersection of the local and global as local green crime is often the product of a chain of geographically dispersed events/activities
Potter (2010)
argues that nearly always the poorest people suffer most from environmental harms
e.g. losing their livelihood
Carrabine et al (2009)
classifies green crime into 2 types:
primary green crime: DIRECTLY inflicting harm on the environment e.g. deforestation, air pollution
secondary green crime: actions committed as a RESPONSE to the commissioning of primary green crime
e.g. attempting to cover it up
Hobbs and Dunningham:
found that the way crime is organised is linked to the economic changes brought by globalisation
people have contacts which act as ‘hubs’ for opportunities
international links and local contexts’ causes changes in globalisation = changes in crime
