Crime:
A legal wrong that can be followed by criminal proceedings which may result in punishment due to being an offence that’s punishable by law.
Deviance:
Behaviour which doesn’t conform to society’s norms and values and thus is disapproved of.
Socially constructed:
Crime and deviance are created and defined by society. They’re also relative and therefore vary according to time, society and circumstance.
Example of Crime and Deviance relative to Time:
In the 1950s/60s, it was deviant of. Woman to not be a stereotypical housewife but now, women are able to branch out of the domestic sphere.
Example of Crime and Deviance relative to Culture:
In some societies, women aren’t allowed to expose their legs whereas in others, women are permitted o wear shorts or skirts.
Example of Crime and Deviance relative to Circumstance:
Murder is a criminal act whereas in the circumstances of war, killing another person is allowed.
Conformity:
Behaviour which fits in with the norms and values of society.
Social Order:
general conformity to shared norms and values, bringing about a peaceful society.
Social Control:
the process whereby people are persuaded to to obey the rules and conform. The agencies of social control are institutions and are either formal or informal.
Formal Social Control:
Carried out by the Criminal Justice System, police, courts and prison service.
Informal Social Control:
Carried out by the family, education system, media, religion and peer groups.
