Lecure 35- Ovarian And Uterine Cycles Flashcards
Ovarian cycle
Set of events that occur in ovaries
Uterine cycle
Occurs at same time as ovarian cycle but focuses on changes in uterus to prepare it for fertilized ovum
Menstrual cycle
Describes changes in uterus but often refers to ovarian and uterine cycles and hormonal changes throughout the body
Follicular phase of ovarian cycle
Follicle develops and oocyte within undergoes meiosis
Ovulation
Occurs when the vary wall ruptures and secondary oocyte is expelled, following a peak in LH secretion
Luteal phase
Characterized by formation of corpus luteum, begin to secrete progesterone and some estrogens
Menarche
First menstrual cycle
What do moderate levels of estrogen do?
Exert negative feedback on anterior pituitary gland, inhibiting release of FSH and LH
What do high levels of estrogen do?
Exert positive feedback on anterior pituitary, resulting in LH triggering secondary oocyte maturation and ovulation
What do rising levels of estrogen during puberty promote?
Oogenesis and follicle growth in ovary
Uterine cycle
Series of cyclic changes that uterine endometrium goes through each month in response to changing levels of ovarian hormones in blood
Coordinated with phases of ovarian cycle
Menstrual phase (day 1-5)
Time when endometrium is shed from the uterus
Ovarian hormones are at their lowest levels and FSH and LH begin to rise
Proliferative phase (preovulatory days 6-14)
Time which endometrium is rebuilt
Secretory phase (postovulatory days 15-28)
Endometrium prepares for implantation of embryo
