Lecture 33- Testes And Penis Flashcards
Primary sex organs
Ovaries and testes
Produce gametes- ova and sperm
Sex hormones
Androgens from testes and estrogens and progesterones from ovaries
Accessory reproductive organs
Ducts ad glands and external genitalia
Scrotum
Sac of skin that houses the testes
Provides temperature appropriate environment for sperm
Responds to temperature changes- wrinkles and close to body when cold and loose when too warm
Testes
Primary reproductive organ, produces sperm and testosterone
Leydig cells
Produce androgens (testosterone)
Sertoli cells
Promote sperm production by her, cells and form blood-testis barrier
Pampiniform venous plexus
Surrounds testicular artery, absorbing heat to maintain temp.
Spermatic cord
Contains autonomic nerve fibres, blood vessels and lymphatics ands passes through the inguinal canal to each testis
Follicle stimulating hormone
Indirectly stimulates spermatogenesis
Lutenizing hormone
Stimulates leydig cells to produce testosterone
Inhibin
FSH inhibiting protein released by Sertoli cells, and when sperm count is too high
Testosterone
Targets accessory organs, initiating spermatogenesis, and ducts, glands and the nis causing them to grow to adult size and function
Can induce male secondary sex characteristics - pubic, axillary and facial hair, deepening of voice etc.
Epididymis
6 metres long
Place for immature sperm to develop until expelled during ejaculation
Ductus deferens
Part of spermatic cord from epididymis, through inguinal canal into pelvic cavity and into ejaculatory duct and passes through prostate to join urethra
Urethra(male)
Carries both urine and sperm to exterior environment
Seminal glands
Posterior to bladder wall
Alkaline secretion accounts for 70% volume of semen
Contains fructose, ascorbic aid, coagulating enzyme and prostaglandins
Prostrate gland
Encircles urethra, inferior to bladder, responsible for producing milky, slightly acidic fluid that comprises up to one third of semen and plays role in sperm activation
Bulbourethral glands
Produce thick, clear mucous prior to ejaculation that neutralizes any acidic urine in urethra
Semen
Milky, white, somewhat sticky mixture of sperm and accessory gland secretions that provide transport medium for sperm
Penis
Copulatory organ
Made of attached root and free body that ends in enlarged tip
Foreskin (prepuce)
Covers penis and may be slipped back to form cuff around tip (glans)
Circumcision
Surgery to remove foreskin
Three cylindrical bodies of penis
Corpus spongiosum- surround urethra
And paired copra cavernosa
Erection
Caused by enlargement of erectile tissues with blood during sexual arousal
Ejaculation
Propulsion of semen triggered by sympathetic nervous system
