Lecture3: Microstructure Of Musculoskeletal Elements Flashcards
What 2 layers make up the perichondrium?
Outer fibrous and inner neural
What is the function of perichondrium?
The growth of cartilage at its periphery and nourishment of chondrocytes
What is the extra-cellular matrix of the cartilage responsible for?
Firmness and flexibility
Which layer of the perichondrium are chondrocytes found?
Inner cellular
What do chondroblasts look like?
Flattened oval cells
What are chondroblasts function?
Appositional growth (secretion of cartilage matrix)
What do chondroblasts secrete?
Chondrocytes
What do younger chondrocytes look like and where are they?
Flat and elliptical, more so towards the perichondrium
What do mature chondrocytes look like and where are they?
Round and deeper at the bottom
What is the chondrocyte function?
Interstital growth (maintenance of cartilage matrix)
What do Hyaline Cartilages look like?
Smooth and firm with a glassy appearance
What describes Elastic cartilage?
Very flexible and can bear mechanical stress
Where are Elastic Cartilages found?
Ear pinna, epiglottis, external auditory meatus
What do the cells look like in elastic cartilage?
Numerous and crowded
What describes White Fibro Cartilage?
Best in class strength and never at the perichondrium
