Lecture27: Neuroglia And Myelination Flashcards
What is the most common glial cells?
Astrocytes
What are the precursors of the astrocytes?
The radial glial cells
What is the shape of astrocytes?
They are large stellate cells
Do astrocytes regulate K+ levels?
Yes
What are Ependymal cells?
They are simple epithelial cells with microvilli
What are microglial cells?
They are small with long spiny processes
What do microglial cells do?
They act as macrophages during development and are inactive in adults
What do Oligodendrocytes do?
Myelination in the CNS
How do oligodendrocytes myelinate?
They wrap around the axons and form lipid bi-layers that acts as excellent myelin sheath and insulators
What do Schwann cells do?
They are responsible for myelination in the PNS
Diff between Schwann and Oligodendrocytes?
Schwann only myelinates one axon in the PNS
