Lecture18: Organization And Function Of Motor And Prefrontal Cortex Flashcards
What is the function of the primary motor cortex? MI
Execution of skilled movements
What does damage to the primary motor cortex lead to?
Paralysis on the opposite side of the body
What does the Premotor area do?
The planning of learned movements that involve external sensory cues such as writing
What does the SMA, Supplementary motor area do?
It prepares complex sequences of movements involving both hands (such as opening or closing the hand)
What does damage to the PM and SMA lead to?
Apraxia, that’s difficulty performing known tasks
What does the frontal eye field do?
Controls the voluntary movement of the eyes
What does stimulation of the frontal eye field do?
The deviation of the eyes opposite to the side of stimulation
What does the pre frontal cortex do?
It’s the personality center, responsible for all conscious decisions, personality traits and what not
What happened to phineas gage?
A steel rod destroyed his left frontal lobe, thus marking an end to his personality as they knew it
What is Thalamo-cortical projection?
It’s when the thalamus acts as a relay station for all sensory input
What does the thalamus do in Thalamo-cortical projection?
It only sends the important signals to the somatosensory cortex
