Lecture12 : Pain Physiology Flashcards
When is Arachidonic acid released?
During tissue damage
When is histamine released?
After tissue damage via mast cells
When is Potassium increased?
Following tissue damage
Are NSAIDs effective in minimizing pain?
Yes
Which fibres have fast pain conduction?
A Delta
Which pain fibres are for precise pain localization?
Alpha Delta
Which pain fibres are unmyelinated?
C fibres
Which pain fibres have slow conduction?
C fibres
Which Pain fibres carry information from polymodal nociceptors?
C fibres
Which pain type is caused by prick and induces flexion withdrawal?
Nociceptive ( Acute pain)
Which fibres are for burning/soreness pain?
C-fibres
Which fibres are for sharp pricking pain?
A delta fibres
What is the mechanism of prolonged pain?
Development of areas of hypersensitivity around the injury site
How long does neuropathic/chronic pain last?
2/3months
What does neuropathic/chronic pain present as?
Burning or pins and needles sensation
What does neuropathic/chronic pain respond well to?
Antidepressants or anticonvulsants
Explain Peripheral sensitization
After a peripheral nerve lesion, neurons become unusually sensitive. Thus heightened sensitivity to stimuli
What is hyperalgesia?
When the threshold for pain in site of injury is lowered
What is Allodynia?
Pain from stimulus that doesn’t normally produce pain
