hypothyroidism s/s
apathy, lethargy, muscle aches and weakness, constipation, extreme fatigue, brittle hair and nails, hair loss, intolerance to cold, heavy menses

DOC for hypothyroidism
half life = 7 days so 1 month for steady state
AE thyrotoxicosis
thyroid responsible for:
energy use (metabolism, heat),
stimulates the heart,
promotes growth and development
hyperthyroidism s/s
Graves disease
tremors, tachycardia, muscle wasting, diarrhea, weight loss, fine straight hair, amenorrhea (light/no menses), intolerance to heat, sometimes exophthalmos and goiter
thyroid storm
profound hyperthermia (105*) severe tachycardia restlessness, agitation tremors unconsciousness, como, hypotension
tx: methimazole, beta blocker, glucocorticoids, iv
sedation, cooling

radioactive iodine
delayed effect 2-3 months
AE: hypothyroidism
Lugol’s solution (non-radioactive iodine)
used to suppress thyroid function before thyroidectomy
