Lecture 9.2 Flashcards
What is the main neurotransmitter in the gut?
ACh
What type of neurotransmitter is GABA in the gut and in the brain?
Excitatory-gut
Inhibitory-brain
What happens in the gut when it is in the fasted state?
Migrating motor complex, where there is no food however there is bacterial movement throughout the colon
What happens within the gut in the fed state?
Segmenting and propulsive contractions
What are the Interstitial Cells of Cajal?
They are a group of cells that create slow wave potentials that lead to contractions of the smooth muscle within the gut
How do ICC’s communicate with eachother?
Through Gap junctions
What 2 neurotransmitters do ICC’s respond to?
ACh for excitatory and NOS for inhibitory neurons
What is the segmentation circuit?
Band of active excitatory motor neurons at the site of contraction alongside 2 inhibitory bands either side of contraction
What is the goal of the segmentation circuit?
It prevents the excitation from moving thus if the inhibitory bands were to be broken, segmental contraction would change to propulsion
Name 4 types of neurons within the ENS
Sensory neurons around the intestine, Interneurons along the intestine, excitatory motor, inhibitory motor
Name 2 transmitters that bind to inter neurons
Cal retaining and NOS reactive neurons
What did Dogiel concluded in 1899?
He found 3 types of enteric neurons
What did Dogiel find about the his second class of enteric neurons?
That these neurons were form the mucosa and supplied other my enteric ganglia
Finish this sentence: If a neuron responds to sensory still I without synaptic transmission…
It must have a sensory function in addition to other functions
