Lecture 8.1 Flashcards
What comprises of the Lamina terminalis?
OVLT and SFO
What does the OVLT do?
Regulates osmolality by measuring volume and through cell stretch
Name the 2 places osmolality is detected
Peripheral receptors and central receptors (OVLT, SON and PVN)
What is the pathway from the Lamina terminalis to the posterior pituitary?
OVLT-Hypothalams (SON and PVN)- Posterior Pituitary
What gets secreted from the posterior pituitary?
Oxytocin and Vasopressin
Describe the hormone Oxytoxin and what it does
It is a hormone, begins the cycle of labor, released when the cervix stretches, and when the nipples are stimulated when breastfeeding
Describe the hormone Vasopressin (AVP) and what it does
It is a hormone that increases the re-uptake of water into the blood
Describe the molecular process when Vasopressin is released
AVP attaches to a V2 G coupled receptors, activates GalphaS and adenylate cyclase, this stimulates production of cAMP, which increases PKA and protein phosphorylation. This is turn increases production of Aquaporins which increase the amount of water moving into the lumen and increasing the concentration of urine
What inhibits the normal function of Vasopressin?
Alcohol
What are TRP receptors?
Ion channels on plasma membrane that sense osmotic pressure, volume and stretch
