Lecture 8.3 Flashcards
What are the 2 top most complex parts of the nervous system
Brain and the enteric nervous system
How long is the enteric nervous system and where does it run from?
Larger then 7 meters and runs from the mouth to the anus
What are the 2 plexus in the ENS and where are they found?
Myenteric plexus between the circular and longitudinal muscles
Submucosal plexus between the mucosa and the circular muscle layer
What are the layers in which the ENS is part of
Mucosa, Submucosal plexus, Circular muscle, Myenteric plexus, Longitudinal muscle
Describe the Myenteric plexus and its function (5 points)
Main control center
Motor innervation to both muscle layers
Sympathetic and parasympathetic innervation
Ganglionic plexus begins at esophageal sphincter and innervates esophagus, stomach and intestine
Describe the Submucosal plexus and its function (7 points)
Within the submucosa of the intestinal wall
Derived from the myenteric plexus
Only has PNS fibers
Provides secretomotor innervation to the mucosa
Present in the stomach but is non-ganglionated
Ganglionated plexus beings at the pylorus
Regulator of water and salt secretion
What are 3 functions of the enteric nervous system?
Control of content movement within the intestine
Regulation of water and solute
Contributions to control of mucus secretion
What is a toxin that stops contractions in the intestines
Tetrodotoxin
What is the difference between intrinsic primary afferent neurons and extrinsic primary afferent neurons within the ENS?
Intrinsic trigger secretory and peristaltic contractions
Extrinsic send signals to CNS
