Lecture 9: Infant Mortality Rate Flashcards
When is the Neonatal period?
The NEONATAL period starts at birth and runs to 28 days of age.
When is the Early Neonatal period?
7 days after birth
When in the Late ameonatal period?
From 7 days to 28 days after birth
When is Infancy?
INFANCY is the period from birth to one year of age - Infancy is inclusive of the Neonatal Period
What’ information does the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) tell?
the population level likelihood that a child born will survive beyond 1 year of age
Widely used as an indicator of population health and wellbeing status
Why is IMR measured?
the population level likelihood that a child born will survive beyond 1 year of age
Widely used as an indicator of population health and wellbeing status
What are the advantages of IMR?
Indicative of wider odious Ati on health and health service provision factors
Simple and easy to collect
Widely accepted measure
What are the cons of IMR measure?
Narrow measure
Date quality
Can mask improvement in care
What are the Major Causes of Deaths in Infants & Children?
Globally, infectious diseases, (including pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria), pre- term birth, suffocation (birth asphyxia) and trauma, and congenital anomalies remain the leading causes of death for children under five.
What can save many young lives?
Medical care and interventions such as skilled delivery at birth, postnatal care, breastfeeding and adequate nutrition, vaccinations, and treatment for common childhood diseases
Children are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases, but many simple and affordable public health interventions can be deployed to reduce mortality
True or false?
True
What will happen to prevent deaths in children?
- Reduce newborn mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1000 live births in every country (SDG 3.2);
- Reduce under-five mortality to at least as low as 25 per 1000 live births in every country (SDG 3.2).
