Lecture 9 - Clinical Renal Failure and Tests Flashcards
Acute kidney injury?
sudden rapid reduction in GFR, days/weeks, usually reversible, usually non-renal causes
Chemical characteristics of acute tubular failure?
high creatinine, low urine output, high potassium
Post renal problems?
kidney stones, tumour, prostate hypertrophy, urinary retention
Chronic kidney disease?
months/years, gradual decline in renal function, irreversible
Chemical characteristics of chronic kidney failure?
elevated creatinine and urea, normal urine output
Main cuases of CKD?
diabetes, glomerulonephritis, hypertension
Pathology of CKS?
build up of creatinine -> scarring of glomeruli and interstitum
Signs of CKD?
usually asymtomatic, potentially hypertension, oedema and raised JVP
Stimuli for parathyroid hormone secretion?
low Ca2+, high phosphate
Consequence of PTH acting on calcium?
uses bone stores, blood level restores, fractures, vascular calcification
