Lecture 18 - Clinical Renal Failure Flashcards
Presentation definition of kidney failure?
high creatinine, low GFR
Other blood tests useful in separating acute and chronic?
ESR (high), calcium (low), phosphate (high), haemoglobin
Relevance of haemoglobin test?
kidney produces erythropoietin - normal RBC indicate acute failure unless bleeding has occured (month life span of RBC)
Main renal-caused condition?
acute tubular necrosis - usually from pre-renal cause not treated early enough
Other cause of intrinsic renal failure?
rapidly progressive Glomerulonephritis - red cells in ruine, crescents in glomeruli
Best test for post renal?
kidney ultrasound
Signs of chronic kidney failure?
malnutrition, fluid overload, rash, pericardial rubq
Tests of chronic kidney disease?
low RBC, small kidney
BP treatment?
ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, diuretics
