What is the main tissue component of the dermis?
Type 1 collagen

What are two features of wool hairs?

What is a features of wool hairs that allows them to be spun easily?
Fine but rough scale on the surface
Why is cashmere wool difficult to spin?
No cuticles present on the surface
What is secreted by wool glands?
Sebum = woolfat/woolwax (lanolin)
Sweat = suint (water soluble portion of yolk)
Woolfat +suint = “yolk”
What is secreted by ceruminous glands and where are they located?
These are modified sweat glands that are located in the inner ear. The ceruminous secretion consists of sebum + shed epidermis
What are anal glands?
Deep sacs filled with sebacceous secretion on either side of the anus.
What is the function of peri-anal glands?
Dotted around the anus of the dog thought to have a potential endocrine function.
What is a scent gland specialisation within cats?
Scent marking comes from special facial glands
Describe the structure of a horn:
Heavy keratinous bone overlying permanent bone core
Describe the structure of antler:
Decidous, rapidly forming and growing bone
