Lecture 18 Flashcards
What are the main functions of the female reproductive organ?
- Produce an ovum 2. Facilitate sperm transport to site of fertilisation 3. Provide sanctuary and nourishment for developing embryo 4. Provide passage for birth 5. Provide nourishment for the young- occurs from mammary glands
What is the main difference is position between the female gonads and the male gonads?
Female gonads remain within the body cavity
What is the name for the outside area of ovary?
Cortex
What is the name for the inside area or the ovary?
Medulla
What is the name for the outside layer of the ovum that protects against multiple sperm penetration?
Corona radiata
What is the name of the structure that remains after the ovum leaves the ovary and what is its function?
Corpus luteum. It signals to the rest of the reproductive tract that ovulation takes place and hence that it should be ready to receive it.
What is the name of hormone that induces ovulation? What are the two ways ovulation can be induced?
Leuteinising hormone. Can be spontaneous or can be induced by fucking
Provide a basic overview of the steps that are involved in folliculogenesis:
- Primordial follicles (single oocyte w/ layer of follicle cells, arrested in meiosis one since birth) 2. Follicular growth. Increase in the oocyte mass and layers of follicle mass 3. Zona pellucida established 4. Antral/ graafian follicles protrude from the surface of the ovary
What are the three main areas of the uterine tube?
- Infundibulum- has fimbriae on the end of it 2. Body- ampullae 3.Isthmus- where it connects to the uterus
What is the main function of the uterus and briefly explain its structure?
House the developing embryo and provide nourishment for it.
What is the function of the cervix?
Connects the uterus to the vagina. Has very thick muscular walls and a cervical canal that runs through it s
What is meant by the endometrium?
Refers to the lining of the uterus
What are the boundaries of the vagina and what is its function?
Extends from the uterus to the urethral orifice. Cervix protrudes anteriorly into the vagina (fornix). Acts as a birth canal and also receives the dick in sex.
What are the boundaries of the vestibule and how does it differ in structure from the vagina?
Extends from the urethral orifice to the labia of the vulva. It contains glands for mucous and pheromone production and lubrication during sex
Where is the vulva located?
External genitalia
