Lecture 10 Flashcards
Name the type of epithelia that cover the outside of the skin:
The outside of the skin is covered by epidermal epithelia. Whereas the inside of the skin is covered by mucosal epithelia
Give some examples of mechanical, chemical and biological defence systems that are commonly used by the epithelia to resist infect:
Dried up dead cells on epithelium, mucous, pepsin and acid and lysozymes
Why are mucosal surfaces generally more prone to infection than other areas?
Significantly greater surface area and moistness
What occurs in the process of opsonisation?
The liver will produce complement protein that will bind to the pathogen. This allows the phagocytes to consume the pathogen more easily. It acts like a kind of glue
