Lecture 34 Flashcards
What is the effect of a 10 degree rise in temperature?
a doubling of the reaction rate
What are the four heat activated channels?
TRPV1-4
What are the two cold activated channels?
TRPM8 and TRPA1
What is the name of the primary integration area of thermal integration?
Pre-optic area is the primary thermointegrative and thermosensitive site of the central nervous system (able to regulate it’s own temperature as well as receiving information from multiple other areas of the central nervous system
Define the term shivering:
Shivering is involuntary tremor of skeletal muscles, thermo-effector activity for increased heat production.
What is an ectotherm?
An animal that regulates it’s body temperature by behaviour
What are the cardiovascular effects of hypothermia?
- Peripheral vessels- initial vasoconstriction (minimise heat loss to periphery)
- Heart rate- tachycardia initially because of sympathetic stimulation however this will progress to bradycardia as conduction velocities slow
- Blood pressure- decreases with vasodilation and decreased cardiac output
