Lecture 8 - Tissues Flashcards
1
Q
what are tissues
A
group of similar cells that perform a common function
2
Q
what is a matrix
A
- non living extracellular material
- surrounds all tissue
- plays active role
- can be disrupted by disease
3
Q
what are the 4 principle types of tissue
A
- epithelial
- connective
-muscle - nervous
4
Q
what are the primary germ layers?
A
- ectoderm
- mesoderm
- endoderm
5
Q
what is the order of the primary germ layers
A
- superficial —> deep
- ecto —> meso —> endo
6
Q
what is the role of the primary germ layers?
A
specialize and differentiate to form 4 primary tissues
7
Q
what are the tissues of ectoderm
A
- nervous system
- skin epidermis
- lining oral and nasal cavity
8
Q
what are the tissues of endoderm
A
- epithelial lining of GI
- respiratory
- urogenital
- stomach, intestine, lung
9
Q
what are the tissues of the mesoderm
A
give rise to everything else
10
Q
what is the ECM
A
- extracellular matrix
- complex, no living material between cells in a tissue
-amount and contents vary depending on tissue - watery mix of many proteins & glycoproteins
11
Q
what are the components of the ECM?
A
- structural proteins
-glycoproteins
12
Q
what structural proteins are in the ECM
A
- collagen; strong, flexible, tensile strength
- elastin; elastic fibers, allow tissues to move & retain original form
13
Q
what glycoproteins are included in the ECM
A
- fibronectin & laminin; help connect ECM components to cell by binding w/ integrins in PM
- fetal fibronectin; helps detect premature labour
14
Q
what is the function of epithelial tissue
A
- covers body surface & parts, lines cavities
- boundaries btw environments
15
Q
what are the two types of epithelial tissue
A
- membranous (covering or lining epithelium)
- glandular epithelium
