Lecture 8 Flashcards
What is an articulation or joint
It is the place where a bone meets
another bone, cartilage, or teeth
Describe articulations
Articulations vary in stability and mobility, and are classified
into categories based on these qualities
What are the 3 different classifications by structure
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
What are the 3 different classifications by function
Synarthrosis
Amphiarthrosis
Diarthrosis
Definition of fibrous joint
Bones held together by dense regular connective tissue
Definition of cartilaginous joint
Bones joined by cartilage
Definition of synovial joint
Bones separated by fluid-filled cavity
Freely mobile diarthrosis
Describe synarthrosis joint
Immobile joint
Describe amphiarthrosis joint
Slightly mobile joint
Describe diarthrosis joint
Freely moveable joint
What are the 3 specific types of fibrous joint
Gomphoses
Sutures
Syndesmoses
Describe gomphoses joint(teeth)
Joints between teeth, maxilla and mandible; synarthrosis
Describe sutures joint
Joints between skull bones; synarthrosis
Describe syndesmoses joint
Joints between parallel bones in the forearm and leg; amphiarthroses;
What are the 2 specific types of cartilaginous joint
Synchondroses
Symphyses
Describe Synchondrosis joint
Bones joined by
hyaline cartilage ; synarthrosis
Describe Symphysis joint
Bones joined by pad
of fibrocartilage; amphiarthrosis
What is the general anatomy of synovial joints
. Articular capsule
• Joint cavity
• Synovial fluid
• Articular cartilage
• Ligaments
• Nerves and blood vessels
What are the 2 layers of the articular capsule
Outer fibrous layer
Inner synovial membrane
Describe outer fibrous layer
made of dense
regular connective tissue; that strengths joint
Describe inner synovial membrane
Secretes synovial fluid
Describe articular cartilage
Articular surfaces in synovial joints that are
covered by hyaline cartilage
Function of articular cartilage
Reduces friction and acts as shock
absorber
Describe joint cavity
. Space between articulating bones
• Contains small amount of synovial fluid
Function of joint cavity
- Lubricates and nourishes articular cartilages
- Nourishes chondrocytes of articular cartilage
• Absorbs shock during compression of the
joint
Describe ligaments
: Connect bone to
bone; dense regular connective tissue
Function of ligaments
Strengthen and reinforce capsule
Function of sensory nerves
Detect pain
and amount of stretch in a joint
Function of blood vessels
Nourish tissues in the joint
Describe bursae/function
Sacs outside most synovial joints, contain synovial fluid
