Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Needs exist hierarchically. Physiological > safety > belongingness > esteem > cognitive > aesthetic > self-actualization
Humanistic psychology
Basic needs must be met first, before we seek to fulfill higher order needs.
Passionate love
Longing for physical and emotional intimacy
Compassionate love
Tenderness we feel when our life is intertwined with another person.
Terror management theory
Human fear of morality motivates behaviour, particularly those that preserve self-esteem and our sense of belonging.
Self-efficacy
An individual’s confidence that they can plan and execute a course of action to solve a problem.
Self-determination theory
Ability to achieve goals and attain psychological well-being is influenced by degree of control of autonomy, competence, relatedness.
Extrinsic motivation
Performing an activity to earn a reward or avoid punishment.
Intrinsic motivation
Motivated to perform an activity for its own sake and personal rewards.
