Motivation
The physiological and psychological processes underlying the initiation of behaviours that direct organisms towards specific goals.
Homeostasis
The body’s physiological processes that allow it to maintain consistent internal states in response to the outer environment.
Drives
Physiological triggers that tell us we may be deprived of something and cause us to seek out what is needed.
Incentives
Stimuli we seek to reduce drives.
Type 1 diabetes
Auto-immune condition, pancreas is damaged and stops producing insulin.
Allostasis
Motivation being influenced by the anticipation of future needs caused by stress.
Type 2 diabetes
Insulin resistance due to lifestyle factors.
Hypothalamus
Nuclei at the bottom of the brain with no blood barrier. Monitors blood glucose levels and can turn hunger on and off.
Set-point theory
Each individual has an ideal body weight/set point, which is resistant to change.
Obesity
A disorder of positive energy balance, in which energy intake exceeds energy expenditure.
Anorexia nervosa
Self-starvation, intense fear of weight gain, denial of serious consequences.
Bulimia nervosa
Characterized by periods of food deprivation, binge-eating and purging.
