Behaviour is a function of the person and the environment.
Mimicry
Copying the behaviours, emotional displays, and facial expressions of others.
Chameleon effect
Tend to mimic others unconsciously.
Social contagion
Behaviour, emotions or attitudes spreading spontaneously through a crowd or social network, from one member to another.
Ostracism
Being ignored or excluded from the social contract.
Social loafing
Occurs when an individual puts less effort into working on a task with others.
Social facilitation
When one’s performance is affected by presence of others.
Normative influence
Result of social pressure to adopt a group’s perspective in order to be accepted.
Information influence
When people feel the group is giving them useful information.
Pluralistic ignorance
Public behaviour might not match actual beliefs.
The Migram Experiment
Many people are willing to follow the order of an authority figure to the extent that they would kill another person.
Bystander effect
Presence of other people actually reduces the likelihood of helping behaviour.
Diffusion of responsibility
Reduced personal responsibility that a person feels when more people are present.
Altruism
Helping others in need without receiving or expecting reward.
Empathy
Understanding what another’s situation feels like.
