Lecture 7 - Content Positioning Flashcards
1
Q
What is content positioning?
A
The frame of reference for the content to be placed.
2
Q
What are the 2 types of content positioning?
A
- egocentric
- exocentric
3
Q
What is egocentric?
A
relative to the viewer e.g. a menu is always palced 2m in front of user
4
Q
What is exocentric?
A
relative to the world in which the user is placed e.g. always in the corner of the room
5
Q
Advantages of egocentric positioning?
A
- mobile
- consistent as always in the same place
- user can always reach it
6
Q
Disadvnatages of egocentric positioning?
A
- not integrated with the environment, but the device
- content that appears might be obtrusive
- the content is single user only
- content can move with the user, so can jitter , unstable
7
Q
Advantages of exocentric positioning?
A
- integrated with the environment -> provides immersion.
- Can optimise presentation
- Can provide implicit haptics (display buttons on a table, so clicking the button is like tapping the table -> physical feedback)
- there is a shared frame of reference so it can collaborate with other objects
8
Q
Disadvantages of exocentric positioning?
A
- requires 6DOF (expensive and hard to get precise)
- limited access , content in a fixed location
- limited discoverability and reachability depending on where the content is rendered (maybe out of our sight? how do we know this?)
9
Q
Can we couple exocentric and egocentric together?
A
Yes, there are situations where both can be argued for.
e.g., AR display showing navigation directions: both
