Lecture 7 - AR Devices and Experiances Flashcards
What is AR?
Adding virtual sensations to the real environment. Towards the real side on the continuum.
AR Experiances?
- Handheld AR
- Overlay AR
- Immersive AR
- Auditory AR
Advantages and disadvantages of Handheld (e.g. phone) AR Experiances?
+:
- we already have them with us
- familiar usage
- can be put away
- can be taken anywhere (mobile)
-:
- limited viewport (scren can only be so big) , which leads to limited immersion
- restrictive and not readlily available
- 6DOF not commonly integrated and still under development
- potentially limited input as one hand will need to hold the device
What is Overlay AR?
Placing content in front of users’ vision.
Advantages and disadvantages of overlay AR?
+:
- unrestrictive
- readily available
- minimal hardware
- requires 0DOF or 3DOF maximum
-:
- limited interaction possible
- occludes rather than integrates
- very limited immersion
- egocentric only
Advantages and disadvantages of immersive AR?
+:
- unrestrictive
- readily available
- Perspective-dependent rendering
- immersive and integrated
- egocentric and exocentric
-:
- greater technical demands (with exocentric especially)
- bulkier and less fashionable (development in this area)
- expensive
Advantages and Disadvantages of auditory AR?
+:
- unrestrictive and readily available
- minimal hardware necessary (only speakers)
-:
- limited discoverability
- limited interaction possible
What is auditory AR?
Augmented reality with sound e.g. pass through to the environment (ambient sound)
Hardware influences interaction design, content placement for mixed reality.

Augmented Reality enhances the real environment with virtual content:
* Many form factors: handheld, glasses, earphones, etc
