Lecture 7 Flashcards
End Feel
barrier to further motion found at the end of passive range of motion
each joint has a unique structure that will provide a stopping point to mobility
each joint will have its own characteristic feel
Joint structure that causes end feel
joint capsule
ligament
contact of joint surfaces
soft tissue tension
soft tissue approximation
Abnormal end feel
muscle spasm
spasticity
hard/soft capsular
bone to bone
empty
springy block
Joint mobilization
passive movements applied manually at varying speeds and amplitudes to the joints and soft tissues
Goals of joint mobilization
improve overall ROM
increasing joint play
increasing mobility btwn joint surfaces
decrease pain
promote synovial fluid movement
Osteokinematics
observable, voluntary motion of bones
AROM
arthrokinematics
involuntary movement of joint surfraces
Joint play
motions that occur btwn joint surfaces
give of joint capsules and ligaments which allow bones to move—> whats the sensation that occurs
Accessory motion
movement occuring btwn two joint surfaces that is produced by forces applied by examiner
Slide = glide
single point on one articular surface contacts multiple points on another articular surface
Compressiom
leads to the decrease in joint space between bony partners
occurs during weight bearing
muscle contraction can cause some, but stabilizing force
moves synovial fluid
Traction
longitudinal pull
Distraction
separation or a pulling apart of joint surfaces from each other.
Does not always occur when a traction force is applied to long axis of bone
Why shouldn’t you stretch a limb to stretch a tight capsule?
magnifies force at joint
excessive joint compression
does not replicate normal joint mechanics
